AMD Unveils Ryzen AI Max PRO 400 Series: Massive 192GB RAM Support and Modest Performance Upgrades

AMD today revealed its new Ryzen AI Max PRO 400 series mobile processors, headlined by support for up to 192GB of RAM—the largest memory capacity ever offered in a laptop chip. The lineup brings modest boosts to CPU, GPU, and NPU performance over the previous generation, targeting high-end AI workstations and professional mobile computing.

The flagship model, the Ryzen AI Max+ 395, remains the company's most powerful mobile chip with 16 Zen 5 cores, 32 threads, a Radeon 8060S GPU featuring 40 RDNA 3.5 compute units, and a 50 TOPS NPU. However, the new PRO 400 variants introduce a range of lower-core-count options while retaining the industry-leading memory support.
192GB RAM: A Game Changer for Mobile AI Workloads
According to AMD, the PRO 400 series utilizes LPDDR5x memory with error correction, enabling up to 192GB in dual-channel configuration. This capacity is more than double the previous max of 64GB found in most competing chips. 'Professionals running large language models or real-time rendering can now do so entirely on a laptop without relying on cloud compute,' said Emily Chen, AMD's senior director of client processor marketing.
The company did not disclose exact memory speeds, but sources indicate the controllers support up to 8000 MT/s in certain configurations.
CPU, GPU, and NPU Speed Boosts
Beyond RAM, the PRO 400 series offers incremental performance improvements. Clock speeds on the highest-tier CPU models increase by 100-200 MHz, while the integrated Radeon 8060S GPU sees a 5-7% frequency bump. The NPU, responsible for on-device AI tasks, gains an extra 5 TOPS of throughput—reaching 55 TOPS on top SKUs.
'These are refinements, not revolutions,' noted David Park, an analyst at TechInsights. 'But paired with the massive memory uplift, AMD is clearly targeting users who need to hold entire datasets locally.'

Background
The Ryzen AI Max series debuted in early 2024 with the +395 chip, which quickly became a benchmark for mobile AI performance. It combined Zen 5 architecture, RDNA 3.5 graphics, and a dedicated NPU capable of 50 trillion operations per second (TOPS). Competitors like Intel and Apple have since caught up with their own on-device AI accelerators, but no mobile platform yet matches the PRO 400's 192GB ceiling.
AMD's new PRO brand extends beyond consumer lines, adding enterprise features such as TPM 2.0, remote management, and certification for professional ISV applications.
What This Means
For laptop manufacturers, the ability to offer up to 192GB RAM in a thin-and-light form factor opens new use cases—particularly in scientific simulation, video editing, and AI model training at the edge. 'We expect to see workstations that can run full 7B parameter models locally,' said Park. The modest CPU and GPU boosts mean existing +395 owners may not need to upgrade, but those requiring extreme memory capacity now have a clear option.
AMD expects the first PRO 400 laptops to ship in Q2 2025, starting at around $1,500 for entry-level configurations.
